ESFI, LPI Urge Awareness of Lightning Safety

Lightning strikes the United States as many as 20 million times each year. Because lightning traditionally causes more deaths than tornadoes or hurricanes and occurs when outdoor activity reaches a peak, the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) and the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) are reminding consumers and those who work outdoors of these lightning safety guidelines.

Lack of awareness about what to do during thunderstorms seems to be a factor in many lightning injuries and deaths," noted Michael G. Clendenin, executive director of ESFI.

"lightData from the National Weather Service shows that lightning strikes are fatal in approximately 10 percent of strike victims. Another 70 percent of survivors suffer serious long-term effects.

Outdoors is the most dangerous place to be during a lightning storm. Because lightning can travel sideways for up to 10 miles, blue skies are not a sign of safety. If you hear thunder, take cover. For protection in homes and buildings, consider contracting with an experienced LPI-certified lightning protection specialist to install a lightning protection system, which can intercept lightning strikes and guide the current harmlessly to the ground.

"The LPI certifies individuals through a Master Installer testing program to maximize safety through education," says Bud VanSickle, executive director of the Lightning Protection Institute. "LPI-certified specialists are trained in accordance with national safety standards of LPI, the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and Underwriters Laboratories (UL)."

ESFI and the Lightning Protection Institute (LPI) recommend following these guidelines to stay safe during electrical storms:

* If outdoors, go inside. Look for a shelter equipped with a lightning protection system.
* Go to a low point. Lightning hits the tallest object. Get down if you are in an exposed area.
* Stay away from trees.
* Avoid metal. Don't hold metal items, including bats, golf clubs, fishing rods, tennis rackets or tools. Avoid clotheslines, poles and fences.
* If you feel a tingling sensation or your hair stands on end, lightning may be about to strike. Crouch down and cover your ears.
* Stay away from water. This includes pools, lakes, puddles and anything damp, such as wet poles or grass.
* Don't stand close to other people. Spread out.
* Once indoors, stay away from windows and doors.
* Do not use corded telephones except for emergencies.
* Unplug electronic equipment before the storm arrives and avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords during storms.
* Avoid contact with plumbing, including sinks, baths and faucets. Do not take baths and showers during electrical storms.
* Don't forget pets during thunderstorms. Doghouses are not lightning-safe. Dogs that are chained can easily fall victim to a lightning strike.

Victims of lightning strikes should be given CPR if necessary, and seek medical attention. For protection in homes and buildings, consider contracting with an experienced LPI-certified lightning protection specialist to install a lightning protection system, which can intercept lightning strikes and guide the current harmlessly to the ground.

LPI recommends contacting local lightning protection specialists for more information; or visit their website at www.lightning.org. For more information on electrical safety, visit ESFI's website at www.electrical-safety.org.

Founded in 1994 through a joint effort between Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL), the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA), the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) is North AmericaĆ¢€™s only non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to promoting electrical safety in the home, school and workplace. ESFI is a 501(c)(3) organization funded by electrical manufacturers and distributors, independent testing laboratories, utilities, safety and consumer groups, and trade and labor associations. ESFI sponsors National Electrical Safety Month each May, and engages in public education campaigns and proactive media relations to help reduce property damage, personal injury and death due to electrical accidents. The Foundation does not engage in code or standard writing or lobbying and does not solicit individuals.

The LPI is a nationwide not-for-profit organization founded in 1955 to promote lightning protection education, awareness and safety. LPI's membership includes architects, engineers, safety directors, scientists, manufacturers and installers who improve safety through lightning protection. LPI recommends contacting local lightning protection specialists for more information; or visit their website at www.lightning.org.

Think safety when decorating house

The Glendale Fire Department hopes you all had a happy and safe Thanksgiving Day.

It's the time of year when many of us barely have time to enjoy a cold turkey sandwich before thinking about holiday lights and Christmas trees.
Glendale Fire wants to remind you of the importance of safety as you begin decorating your home.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, on average, Christmas trees are the ignition source of approximately 300 U.S. home fires each year, resulting in 14 fatalities, 21 injuries and $16.8 million in property damage.

The association reports that 44 percent of Christmas tree fires are caused by an electrical problem or malfunction.

Here are some safety tips from the Glendale Fire Department and the NFPA:

• Make sure that electrical cords are in good working order.
• If you put up a real Christmas tree, regularly check for fresh, green needles. Remember to keep your tree watered at all times and make sure it is at least three feet from fireplaces, radiators, space heaters, heating vents and other sources of heat. Don't place the tree where it blocks an exit.
• Ensure outside lights, decorations and extension cords are rated for outside use.
• Carefully inspect each electrical decoration - new or old - before plugging it in.
• Don't use staples or nails to hang light strings.
• Test all smoke alarms.
• Create and practice your home escape plans.

Season's greetings from every member of the Glendale Fire Department.

The happiness of Doing REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH

In al-Qur `an (QS Ali Imran [03]: 193), mentioning God characteristics Ulul Albab, namely, that they berzikir remember God while standing or sitting or to lie in state. They are the people who always berzikir any time and in any conditions.
They berzikir to thank God above khidmah, and they sit on a few qurbah (closeness with God). Enough for their happiness, as God said in a qudsi word, "I was sitting friend (jalis) who I remember REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH."

Why God became a friend who sat REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH remember? For, REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH is a sign of guardian, evidence wushul (have come to God), marks the beginning of truth, pure and its final destination. And, all the merit of empty REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH remember God.

Sufi large, the Imam al-Qusyairi when interpreting the Al-Baqarah verse 152, "Therefore, you remember to me, I will remember (also) to you," said that as a reply from REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH you to God, He will bestow additional bounty Him to you. If you remember Him in your heart, He will remember you in his resignation. And, if you remember him in the crowd population of the earth, He will remember you in the crowd of the population of heaven.

They are many berzikir to God, had their hearts will always in a state of wakefulness. They will exit from the natural darkness of the natural light, from darkness ghaflah (a negligent) to light hudhur (the presence of liver), and losses from the attitude of lawlessness obedient attitude toward profits. As the emphasis of God in his word following.

"O those who believe, Remember (the name) of God, REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH that as much as possible. And glorify Him morning and evening. He is a mercy to you and His angels (begged for forgiveness), so that He remove you from darkness to light (the light). And He is Merciful to the believers. " (QS. Al-Ahzab [33]: 41-43).

DHIKR, as has been raised in previous articles, not only limited to cleanse his rosary, tahmid praise Him, and He mentions asthma, but it includes things that binds a believer with Rabb's ties with adherence. In other words, REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH include all charities such as the observance of prayer, fasting, charity, pilgrimage, to read Al-Quran, bershalawat to the prophet, deepen the laws of Sharia, to help other people, think of natural phenomena, spend some property, and others. God has promised much for the good of their God-given berzikir within the meaning of the practices, as emphasized obedience of God in his word.

Those who read the Book of Allah and establish prayer and spend part of the provision that We have bestowed them with tacit and overt, they expect that business will not be losers, so that He will reward them and add them to them from His bounty. Allah is Oft-Forgiving Being Thankful. "(QS Faathir [35]: 29-30)

Thus the happiness will be achieved by people who always REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH, in the sense that the practices obedience, God will remove them from darkness to light, the light; their business to welcome losers, and God will reward them refine and add to them from His bounty.

In view of Sufism, REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH is the fastest ways and means to cleanse the heart and soul. For, pezikir REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH will be interesting to natural light. After that, REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH will withdraw to the natural mind. DHIKR for the mind like a lantern for the torch run in the middle of the night darkness to light, the morning show, and the morning light does not need to make the lantern torch again

About the happiness of those who learner REMEMBRANCE OF ALLAH, people Sufi poet, Ali `Aql berdendang in syairnya.

Berzikir let you mention the name of God with all your power.

Berzikir to the people of God will lift him to be his paramour.

How may I forget my Sang How are writers berzikir mention his name at usual morning and evening.
